Fuel pump preservation

Long story short, I rebuilt a fuel pump but it ended up being just enough crudd in the carb to cause problems. So I put the original pump back on because they both are working fine.

The extra pump though, what's the best way to store it? It's already had some fuel through it. A mechanic friend suggested pull it back apart and put Vaseline on everything then when I install it, the gasoline will eat the Vaseline and run fine. I know I'm going to cap the inlet, outlet, and vacuum nipple with fuel line folded over.

Would opening it up and letting things "air out" be good enough? If it makes a difference, the fuel that was ran through it had fuel saver in it.
