This may be old news to most of you, I searched and didn't see a thread with it in the title.
I am building a 700 engine and as I split the case it has the old reverse gear in it.
They updated it on some year model, to be honest I don't know which newer models have the newer reverse gear
When I get the new on in, I will do a video of it so you will now what it is and how to swap it out.
Basically the one in this one is a shaft, with a snap ring, thrust washer, reverse gear, thrust washer then another snap ring
One of the snap rings will come off and the gear slides over then you have no reverse.
So Yamaha has a new design where they use a spacer on the shaft the gear and a thrust washer, it can't move.
Like I said this may be old news to most of you.
If you ever have your engine split, just order the reverse gear and you will get the new reverse set automatically.
It's about $60
