I have a 2009, 700FI and suspect the CDI is the issue but wanted some input before spending $$$ on a new unit. The drivetrain is basically stock with the only mods being a Dynatek CDI and an air filter. I'm running the JBS sheave and a CST long travel kit. The engine is all stock with the stock exhaust and throttle body.
The problem started with the bike simply dying during idle while loading wood and stuff around the property. Usually it fires right back up and runs fine. Yesterday after it died it would start and then die again. sounded similar to running out of fuel but the tank is full and I can hear the fuel pump run during ignition on and build pressure and the shut off which I assume is normal operation. Then it really didn't want to start but eventually did and I was able to get it back to the garage but it would not come back to a low idle, it stayed at high idle with enough rpm's to keep the belt engaged and moving forward if the brake was not applied.
Based on what I have read about the Dynatek CDI this is my first suspect. Before I drop the money on the MSD unit I wanted to ask for any input on other potential causes. I know there are several different sensors on and around the throttle body which could also be sending bad info to the ECU. Are the any reasonable ways to test these like you would for a car with a code reader to narrow down the issue. I don't have a Yamaha dealer close to me and don't know that the polaris shop is going to do anything other than throw parts at it which I can do. I don't want to spend the money on a new CDI and have the issue be a sensor or something else that will leave me in the same boat only poorer.
The Rhino is a California model which I don't know if it has any other emissions crap on it that others but thought I would mention it.
